Franco Servadei , MD

According to the WFNS Mission Statement and Purpose, my candidature Programme includes:

Substantial changes to the WFNS Structure such as :

  • The President and Officers should be elected for a two-year term and not for four years . These changes will not necessarily be related to/affect the WFNS Congress which can be every two or four years . Voting may take place , as now , at the Interim Meetings and , if necessary , at the World Congresses..
  • The Administative Council Meeting should be limited to the members of the Administrative Council . Other officers, such as the Second Vice-Presidents, can take part in the Meetings but cannot partecipate in the voting process. . Honorary Presidents and Past Presidents can participate only if invited for their particular expertise . In my opinion officers of the WFNS should be from different Continents and different Countries with no more than one from any single Institution.
  • The WFNS Congresses and Interim Meetings should have a rotation among the different Continental Organisation . The WFNS itself will take care of the rotation list but not of the nomination of the sites for the Congresses which will be left to the decision of the Continental Organisation.
  • The WFNS should control the activities of the WFNS Foundation . Full transparency is required regarding the entire process of fund-raising and distribution of resources . The WFNS foundation should be based on the same rules for membership as the WFNS:
  • The age limit for the WFNS President, officiers and WFNS Foundation members is 69 years . After the misunderstanding that occurred last year, a complete and clear definition of this age limit is mandatory.
  • The number of WFNS Committes is too high (I have counted 37 Committees) . They mainly meet once a year but their scientific production is very limited . Apart from the By-laws Committees (which could also be re-organized) there is a need for fewer Committees with clear targets (e.g. emission of guidelines, organisation of practical courses etc) and a time limit (for producing results ).

Initiatives aimed at disseminating full knowledge and awareness of WFNS activities

  • To widen the presence and to enhance the role of the Federation in every corner of the world, using the new tools available for communication and the social media;

  • To circulate an electronic Newsletter addressed to the member Societies including update information on activities;

  • To facilitate interactive participation and to encourage  discussion groups on clinical cases through a new technological platform;

  • To promote learning opportunities and to sustain the efforts of single neurosurgeons intending, on a voluntary basis, to join neurosurgical groups in countries with a very low neurosurgeon:population ratio;

  • To organize a greater number of Hands-on Courses and to improve the availability of simulator models for training young neurosurgeons in developing countries;

  • To launch the ambitious initiative “Twin member Societies help each other” for the training Programs of young neurosurgeons. A good model of this is the present Project “Africa 100″, which, however,  can be extended to  other  Continents and further implemented. For example, in Myanmar there are 13 neurosurgeons for 54 million inhabitants and many other similar situations can be found all around the world;

7)  The general limits of the WFNS are those of all Associations of Societies: the difficulty of reaching all the individual members of each single Society: this limit could partly be overcome by providing each member Society with regular, periodical and complete information about its activities.

8) The most important task for the WFNS is to make member Societies and single neurosurgeons feel updated, supported and encouraged in their Research and Training Programs and to feel involved,  possibly  ON-LINE,  in the different issues at hand. This would enable informal discussion of scientific and professional concerns with the international neurosurgical community and favour continuous feedback and proposals through the same platforms.
